Landscapes in North County: Double Peak
This was the last project in Biology for this year. We ended the year with focusing on the different ecosystems and biomes here locally in San Diego County. Each student would plan a lesson around one of the five different places we would learn about and visit in the San Dieguito Watershed. We learned about and went to Double Peak/Discovery Lake in San Marcos, Elfin Forest in Escondido, Volcan Mountain in Julian, Lake Hodges in the San Dieguito River Park and the Birdwing Classroom in Del Mar which is also apart of the San Dieguito River Park. Its been really interesting and important to learn about each of these different areas hands on by actually going to each of these places and learning about them specifically. Also, we are currently in a drought and it makes you have a stronger appreciation for conserving water and the ecosystem by actually seeing it with your own eyes. The lesson I did was about the first hike we went on at Double Peak. We can see the peak from out school, or anywhere in San Marcos really. It has an incredible view of the whole San Dieguito Watershed from the mountains to the ocean. I presented about the geography, the natural and human history and different plants and animals in this area. My lesson plan is below. I also had my group that I was teaching do an activity of a scavenger hunt to find some of those plants and animals. I think my lesson, as well as all of them went really well. I learned a lot through this project and it was so valuable and more real for us all when we had the hands on experience to go and visit each place we were learning about.
