Dream Team Name Campaign
Our team project was called the Team Name Campaign. I worked with two other group members on this project. The project was basically trying to find a name for our team, while learning about marketing, advertising, campaigning, and group work. We all were assigned 3 people to our group and then had to come up with several team names among our group- our group ended up with 3 names- then narrowing those names down to 3 or so names. In our group, we each coincidentally came up with our own name. Mine was the 1&Only and the other one’s were - HTH HEADWAYS, and THE PANDAS THAT EAT POTATOES ALL DAY. A a team, each group made a survey to figure out which of the 3 or so would be the final one to market and advertise. Once we had 30-40 survey responses, we worked on the 3 elements- a physical- where we physically advertise this or give it away- hat, t-shirt; digital- where we advertise digitally by creating a video, commercial, website, blog... to appeal our name/logo to the audience; and print- where you create a printed piece advertising- poster, sticker, the "old fashion" way of advertising, advertisement. Then our whole team had a critique within our team and then as a team all of our groups made adjustments and refinements and changes to the 3 elements. We were leading up to/achieving an exhibition, where we present all of our (hopefully) beautiful work- the 3 elements- each group having their own booth. Then we have students and teachers from other classes come and look at our work, critiquing it and eventually voting on the best one. We as a team would also look at others’ booths and decide on our top 3 choices (including our’s) for the team name. We then narrowed the vote down (as a class) to 4 names, then today we narrowed it down to two, then to the top choice (our final name). As you can see this was a long strenuous process to get the final. Now we finally have our team name!
I personally learned a lot about marketing and advertising as well as group work. I had a major struggle with my group members. It was frustrating to work in a group where I felt like I was doing everything/most of the work, and putting so much time and effort into this project and my group didn’t participate that much. It was a struggle of us getting along and for me to balance my responsibilities and my groups’ while doing well and not getting stressed. It was a major, yet difficult learning learning experience which I can grow from and use in other projects.
One of the ideas our group got was THE PANDAS THAT EAT POTATOES ALL DAY, which I wasn’t a part of making so I don’t understand what/why my group had this name. The name HTH HEADWAYS was saying head we head/want to head to success and strive to do our best and show the world. The name 1&Only got the most survey responses, so we went with that name to advertize. I really wanted to focus on the fact that we are so unique and different as a class, and first it’s ok and awesome to be this way, but our identity isn’t found in school.
This is how some of our group’s thinking and ideas for the names evolved. During this process, we discussed, argued, collaborated and critiqued each other on our work, ideas and progress. I would constantly ask them questions on how to make this name/logo above and beyond and to go deeper with our original ideas. To make the ideas stronger and go beneath the surface and improve. To get their input and ideas for the 3 elements, and to get feedback on my ideas and solutions, to find their ideas and opinions. I wanted to push them and strive to do the best that they could, to create truly beautiful work and to be proud of it.

Five Sentences of Wisdom (Mission Statement)
We are 53 students with the capability to change the world around us. Spinning in a ocean of ideas and creativity, we can shape our course and bring our dreams to reality. But what is most important is the way we do it, the ideas of cooperation and team spirit. This is what do best, this is the thing that makes us different and new. We strive to push others to do their best, to create beautiful work and to ultimately be the One and Only.
This is an Ode we created to show what we stood for and supported in advertising the name/logo 1&Only.
Ode 2.0
Ode to the One and Only who help us every day,
To bring about the feeling that makes work like play,
Ode to the art, we make with our heart,
As we push our teammates far, to raise the standard bar,
Ode to High Tech High who help us every day,
From our first day of school to the day we leave on our way,
Ode to High Fives- cause they’re awesome!

As I have mentioned before, we gave a survey to students, family and the whole school to answer the survey. We did this to find which of the 3 team name we came up with would be the best to go forward with and appealed most to the audience. We had to get 30-40 responses, which took awhile, then we could go forward with that one main team name and use the 3 elements to advertise that to the school and our class to vote on the final name for our team. It honestly took a long time to get all to results, so that was a little hard to deal with. We also made adjustments according to some of the responses given, such as making the 1&Only logo look more professional. But because I have never gone through this process of advertising- specifically the process regarding a survey, I had a lot to learn. I learned things that I will take with me and use in of projects and the world. I'm very glad I learned and can grow and better the world with that knowledge.

Reflection
Some things that went really well were when I figured out that what I needed to do to get my group to work was to motivate them and figure out what their passions were. For example, this whole project was very difficult- one of the most difficult, frustrating learning experience I’ve had. One of my group members did hardly anything, and that was very hard to work with. I finally figured that getting him motivated by something he enjoys or has an interest in would get him to work. He strongly enjoys be technical and working with/on computers. I realized how he could help me and my group when I had an idea for commercial/video I wanted to do. The video needed some one’s voice recording and pictures to go along with that. I, along with my other group member didn’t know how to put a voice recording with pictures together, so I asked Ms. Kali for help. She suggested that I ask this group member that wasn’t participating for his help because she thought/knew that he could do the job. And he did! That ended up be a very successful day, when I figured that to motivate people, you can get them to use their strengths and passions effectively, and we all worked equally on our group work. One other thing that went well was how I put into action, really without knowing, what we had learned in school. I was working on a large-scaled version of a poster I had designed for the project. To find the measurements for the large poster, I ended up using scales and proportion, which I’d have no idea how to do if I didn’t learn it from Mr. Acker and Ms. Kali. I also went through a critiquing stage when I wanted to find the perfect layout of my picture on my poster. I first arranged the picture a certain way, then had my Mom and sister come in and telling me what I did well and could change, which helped in the end. I’m very grateful that I learned I learned these skills and could put them into action. This was very exciting and rewarding to use what I had learned in school and use it in “real life”, which actually was school again.
There were many challenges during this project. Some of them I have already mentioned. I was the only one in the group of 3 that had leadership skills, so I naturally took that position. The fact that I have done work- really good work- for 3 people, is a HUGE challenge. I’m only 14.5 years old- I can’t do everything. It’s really frustrating that I’m putting so much energy, work, time, efficiency into this and my group members really aren’t contributing to this. Many times I didn’t know how to handle it and some times I lost my cool. I felt like I was baking something or making dough- where I kept mixed and adding things and keeping the dough/group together, but I just couldn’t. The “dough” wasn’t working with me. I struggled a lot to keep “working with the dough” and “hold it together”. I took on too much responsibility- responsibility for the whole group and felt the pressure to do perfect work for 3 people. I felt that if they didn’t do their work, then I’d just do it, no matter what- and do it well. I am a perfectionist- where I think extremely deep and thoroughly, yet can get carried away and not know when to stop/let what I’ve done be enough. I don’t need to put that burden on myself, I, again, need to find a balance between doing my work (well) and being the leader/in control without doing their work. This major struggle of doing all most all of the work for my group continued throughout the entire project. As mentioned before, I really didn’t know how to handle it. Sometimes I got very frustrated and upset with my group member, sometimes I went to you, as teachers for help, but I mostly put the responsibility on myself to fix it or do all of the work. This resulted in me being very stressed, sometimes lacking sleep and being very frustrated, not knowing what to do with this problem or what to do with my group members. And it was very difficult to have that feeling of not having control. So, honestly many times, I didn’t know how to overcome the challenges or took it upon myself to fix them, which many times I either couldn’t do, or it brought a lot of stress. I hope that I will find a better way to handle this/these problems and to find a balance of responsibility and amount of work (many times I put so much work and effort into the project and wouldn’t stop, or go to bed) and to take what I’ve learned and grow from that.
Some of the things that I was surprised about was, like I’ve said before was how much responsibility I took on, and how strongly I let it affect me. Also what surprised me was how much work- really good work- I put into this entire project- I did, came up with, and organized almost all of the 3 elements- the physical, digital, and print. I came everyday with something new/better to add to our project- improving it, deepening it, making it the best it could be, while one of my group members really only did what was mentioned in the first paragraph and the other did help but it was on and off and not that much effort. This is of course very frustrating to deal with. I hope next time I will know how to deal with these situations and not put unnecessary responsibility on myself.
I actually really think that this process was a really good learning experience that I needed to have. I need to learn how to balance my time, work, effort, responsibility- mine and others, and to not get so stressed over these projects and to know how deep to go and to let what I’ve done be enough. I have also learned from the experience in the first paragraph that to get someone to work and do well, you motivate them by using something that they are passionate about, enjoy, or is their strengths. From my personal experience they will do well and want to, this really helped our project which I am very thankful for. I have also learned a lot about to the advertising and marketing process. I hope that I can put these skills that I have learned- the advertising and marketing skills as well as the collaborating and group work skills- into effect, and grow from this unique and challenging experience. :)
Sorry, we don't have pictures of the process. Here are the pictures of our Exhibition booth. It contains all 3 elements- we have several posters; our physical give aways- the frisbee, bowl of gummy bears, we also had a hat; and a computer with our digital- the video we made.
