Artist Statement:
Art work depicting anatomy of living beings holds a very unique purpose. Unlike most art, one does not just look and enjoy it and then move along to the next one. The combination of science and art in the form of paintings or drawings of anatomy has a greater objective - to help through teaching. Anatomy, a subdivision of biology, helps one understand much about a species’ body. Through anatomy, one can comprehend where different organs, muscles, bones are - the structure of our bodies. Not only can anatomy provide for us location of internal features, it also shows how each part functions individually and together with other parts. Knowledge of our human body was not acquired quickly or easily, taking much research and experimentation like any other science. Art and science blend in more ways than one might think. How else would someone know what the anatomy of beings are unless one draws or paints it? Art gives the necessary visual side to this science. My art piece is straightforward in its means to portray both artistic and scientific sides of anatomy. I created a three dimensional representation of an arm in the position of an arm drawing. This is to show the “art” side of drawing anatomy. The hand is painted like the exterior of a hand, but then starts to show the muscles and bones of the arm, the science side.
Here is the final draft of my art piece. I chose the artist Frank Netter to research. Frank Netter was a skilled artisan wanting to be a professional artist, but ended up pursuing the medical field to his family's wish. Netter continued to draw and started drawing the human body. He drawings and paintings were so realistic and accurate, he started selling them. Netter earned so much money in this business he quit learning to be a surgeon.
My art piece shows the position of an arm as it would be when drawing. The hand starts out as how the exterior of a hand looks and then starts to show the muscles, bones and viens.

Reflection:
I feel that my painting turned out very well. Many times when I was working on the arm part, I thought it that it really didn't look good at all. It wasn't realistic and looked crappy. As I was working on it and getting close to being done, people kept commenting on how good and realistic it looked, that it even freaked them out because it was so lifelike. I realized that my arm did in fact look like an arm and that I had done a really good job on it. I think that the muscles came out really well, though of course its not perfect. I think that the color of the table cloth looks good and doesn't stand out too much. I feel that the tree, too, came out really well.
I would done something different for creating the actual arm. It was very difficult, it required so much time and effort and no matter what I did it just kept falling apart. It was so frustrating. I think that I would have done the plastic strips and then quicker apply the actual plastic so it would all stick together. The plastic sands well so I could use that. I would definitely consider using something else instead of those to items, because the plastic kept falling off or coming apart. I am not exactly sure how I'd accomplish that though. I would also change my expectations of my art piece. I expected myself to do the job perfectly and of course that's not realistic. I need to lower my expectations of myself and not expect perfection.
I am really proud of my perseverance throughout this process. Like I mentioned earlier I had a lot of difficulties in working on this project. I had a tough time creating the actual arm and a hard time painting it too. I am proud that through the challenges, the tiredness and frustration, I kept going and made process. I didn't give up or totally stop. I asked for help and got a lot of encouragement. That is what I am proud of.
